Florida News That Impacts You – March 28th, 2024  

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.      

  • Governor DeSantis signed two bills into law on Wednesday including the Property Rights bill which combats squatting. Under the new law taking effect July 1st, property owners can have squatters immediately removed from their properties by law enforcement.  
  • Disney and the State of Florida have settled outstanding litigation. Following Disney’s public campaign against the passage of the Parental Rights in Education law in 2022, the state of Florida dissolved Disney’s self-governance via the Reedy Creek Improvement District which was replaced by the state-directed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. Disney alleged retaliation. Disney had that suit dismissed in January but were appealing the decision. Under the settlement terms, all actions taken by the outgoing Reedy Creek Improvement District Board aimed at curbing the authority of the new oversight board were invalidated.  
  • AccuWeather’s Atlantic Hurricane Forecast is calling for one of the most active seasons on record. According to AccuWeather’s meteorologists a combination of warmer-than-usual ocean temperatures along with a flipping of our weather pattern from El Nino, which helps mitigate tropical development in the Atlantic, to La Nina – which is the most favorable for tropical development in the Atlantic are the catalysts.
  • Warm today with highs in the low to mid 80’s, or about seven degrees warmer than usual this date. A front will enter our area this afternoon bringing windy conditions and cooler air along with it. Tomorrow’s high will be in the mid to upper 70’s.  
  • Gas prices rose six cents per gallon for the second straight day. The average price statewide for regular unleaded is currently $3.60 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.74 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.65 and in Indian River County the average is $3.61 per gallon.
